    Wont go into park

Not really a Subaru but I figured someone may know what's up with this.

My brothers 98 Mazda Mellenia 2.5L wont go into park or the lowest drive gear. It just stops at reverse and 2.

Obviously the keys are stuck in it since you can't take them out until the car is in park....

Is this internal transmission? Linkage??? Etc

Car drives fine in reverse and drive...like there is nothing wrong with it

    Thanks for any help

Check your fuses first. These mechanisms are usually operated by solenoids.

I dug into this lastnight. I've never come across this before.

Linkage on the transmission side was adjustable but it checked out OK. If I disconnected the linkage and was manually able to shift into park...so the transmission isn't the issue.

There is a little locking rod on the bottom to the shifter that is not disengaging. All fuses check out OK...and as far as I can tell all electrical is OK. If I manually operate the solenoid that controls the mechanism....I can get it to go into park....but.it was nearly impossible to get out of park. The lock would only go down just shy of disengaging...and I had to use a prybar to help it the rest of the way.

    Grrr
