How to install Rear Differential Support Bushing Kit

One big improvement you can do to your Impreza and WRX is the Rear Differential Bushing upgrade. These Kits are available from manufacturers such as Perrin and Whiteline for a very resonable price. This kit will help reduce driveline slop and the rear end thud you may hear during launches and hard acceleration.

    Ok Lets Get into it.

    Tools You will Need:
    1. Jack
    2. Jack Stands
    3. 12mm socket or wrench
    4. 17mm socket or wrench

    Procedures:

    1. Raise the vehicle to a desired height allowing you enough room to work freely. Be sure to support the vehicle with the jackstands!

    2. Place a floor jack under the differential and raise it about .5" to release tension. This will allow you to lower the differential stabalizer.

3.Next is removing the Stud from that hold the differential to the differential support brace. First use a 17mm socket (this is where a open end rachet is nice if you got one) remove the nuts which are the two in the center (red arrows). You may get lucky here and pull the stud and all together, if you do I always like to replace the stud and nut with new just to ensure I get proper torque during reassembly. If you don't either use the Jam Nut technique to remove the stud or a stud extractor to remove.

    4. Once the two stude are removed from the differential and cross support, you will then remove the two 17mm bolts and nuts (yellow arrows) securing the differential support brace to the rear sub frame.

5.Now slightly lower the differential with the jack to allow clearance to get the support brace out. Depending on your type of exhaust you may have to lower this as well, in our application however we did not.

    6. Once stabalizer is out insert the smaller bushings around the OEM bushing center mounting points. (1 in each opening)

    7. Once all 4 bushings are in place you can now reinstall the differential support brace into the chassis (Don't fully tighten yet)

    8. Raise the differential back into the car, line up the stud holes witht he differential support holes and reinstall the studs.

    9. Now apply the nuts to the studs and tighten to 70ft-lbs

    10. Next you will tighten the nuts and bolts holding the bracket in place and torque those to 70ft-lb.

At this point the back part of the install is done. If you lowered your exhaust you can now put it back in place.

The next steps are putting the bushings into the differential front support beams

    11. On the passanger side locate the differential support beam and remove the 17mm large bolt securing the front support beam to the chassis and the two 12mm bolts securing the plate to the chassis.

    12. Pull down the front support brace until there is enough room to place the new bushing on top of the OEM bushings. Make sure you are putting the new bushings between the Steel washer and the OEM bushing.

    13. Push back up in place and reinstall the plate onto the chassis. The 12mm bolts get torqued to 25ft-lbs and the large 17mm bolt gets tighted to 100 ft-lbs.

    14. Repeat steps 11 through 13 for drivers side

(I do not have a picture of this completed not sure where they went but I will have the car over in a couple of weeks for another install and will take new pictures.)

    15. Clear everything from underneath the car, lower down and test drive.

    Thank You

When removing teh old bushings from the stabilzer, you can use a screw driver to stab a hole in the bushing and then take a large socket anbd place it on the ground. Put the bushing itself on the socket then stomp on the stabilzer and it will cause the old bushing to pop right out!!!
This write up is only for the insert kit, they feel the voids of the OEM Bushings. However you are correct when replacing the bushings unless you have a press.

Good stuff and you are welcome, we are working on more write ups like this for you guys. Also to all the members, do not forget TTLM also manufactures performance bushings now as well. such as shifter bushings, differential support bushings and more to come!
